Description
This is a fully reconditioned Garrett GT17V (GT1749V) turbocharger for the Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDI (115HP) models manufactured between 2000 and 2006, fitted with the ANU or AUY engine. As a variable nozzle turbo (VNT), its internal vanes adjust to provide optimal performance across the engine’s entire rev range, reducing lag and improving efficiency. This unit has been rebuilt at our Birmingham workshop to meet or exceed original manufacturer specifications.
This specific Garrett turbocharger is known for a few common failure modes. The most frequent issue we see is the seizure of the VNT mechanism due to excessive carbon and soot build-up. This is often caused by short-journey driving cycles, EGR valve problems, or running the engine on incorrect oil. When the vanes stick, the turbo can either fail to produce enough boost (underboost) or produce too much (overboost), leading to fault codes and the vehicle entering ‘limp mode’. Other potential faults include wear in the central bearing assembly (CHRA) from oil contamination or starvation, and failure of the electronic actuator that controls the vane position.

Common faults & troubleshooting
- Complete loss of power and black exhaust smoke. This typically indicates a major boost leak or a seized turbo, preventing it from producing any pressure.
- Vehicle enters ‘limp mode’ under acceleration. The ECU is detecting an overboost condition, usually caused by the VNT vanes being stuck in the high-boost position.
- Poor performance and sluggishness at low RPM. This suggests an underboost condition, where the VNT vanes are stuck in the low-boost position or the actuator is faulty.
- A high-pitched siren or whistling noise from the engine bay. This classic symptom points to worn bearings or damaged compressor wheel blades making contact with the housing.
- Engine management light with fault codes for ‘charge pressure control deviation’. This is a direct diagnostic indication that the turbo is not delivering the boost pressure requested by the ECU.
Fitting notes for this unit
- Crucially, you must replace the oil feed pipe (part number available on request). The original pipe is prone to internal carbon build-up which restricts oil flow and will cause premature failure of the new unit.
- Prime the turbo with clean engine oil before starting. Squirt fresh engine oil into the oil feed hole and spin the compressor wheel by hand to ensure the bearings are lubricated for the initial start-up.
- Change the engine oil and filter. Use only the correct grade of oil specified by Ford for the PD engine (e.g., 5W-40 meeting VW 505.01 spec). Contaminated oil is a leading cause of turbo failure.
- Inspect and clean the entire air intake system. Check the intercooler and all pipework for oil residue and debris from the previous turbo failure and clean them thoroughly before connecting the new unit.
- After fitting, let the engine idle for at least 5 minutes. This allows oil pressure to build up and circulate through the turbocharger before it is placed under any load. Check for any oil or exhaust leaks during this time.
- Use a torque wrench on all manifold and exhaust fasteners. This prevents warping the flanges, which can lead to exhaust gas leaks and damage to the turbo.
