Description

This is a fully reconditioned Garrett GT20 turbocharger for the Range Rover TDV8, fitted with the 3.6-litre 368DT engine, covering model years 2007 to 2010. It serves as a direct, high-quality replacement for Land Rover OEM part number LR017315 and alternative Garrett part number 452239-5009s.

The 3.6L AJD-V8 engine uses two of these turbochargers, one for each cylinder bank, to produce its 272 HP output. This is a variable nozzle turbine (VNT) unit, which is critical for providing a wide torque band and meeting emissions standards. The VNT mechanism, controlled by an electronic actuator, adjusts exhaust gas flow over the turbine wheel for precise boost control. This listing is for a single reconditioned unit.

Common failure modes for this specific turbocharger are well-documented. The most frequent issue is the seizure of the VNT mechanism due to excessive carbon and soot build-up, often a result of short-journey driving cycles. This leads to the vanes sticking in one position, causing either overboost or underboost fault codes and putting the vehicle into ‘limp home’ mode. The electronic actuator is another common point of failure, which can suffer from internal electronic faults or mechanical failure of the drive gear, resulting in a total loss of boost control. Standard turbocharger issues such as bearing wear from oil contamination, or oil seal failure leading to exhaust smoke, are also prevalent if servicing schedules are not strictly followed.

At Gap Turbos, this unit has undergone a complete reconditioning process at our Birmingham facility. We strip the turbo down to its individual components for ultrasonic cleaning and detailed inspection. The core assembly (CHRA) is rebuilt using new journal and thrust bearings, new seals, and is then precision balanced on our VSR machine at speeds exceeding 180,000 RPM. The VNT mechanism is cleaned, reassembled, and calibrated on a flow bench to ensure it meets OEM specifications. We offer this part as a reconditioned exchange unit or can provide a full drive-in fitting service, which includes diagnostics, engine oil and filter change, and a thorough clean of all associated pipework.

Common faults & troubleshooting

  • Loss of power and ‘limp home’ mode: This is the classic symptom of a seized VNT mechanism or a failed electronic actuator, causing incorrect boost pressure.
  • Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust: This indicates failed internal oil seals, allowing engine oil to be burnt in the exhaust or pass into the intake system.
  • High-pitched whistling or siren noise: This sound, which changes with engine RPM, points to worn bearings or damaged compressor/turbine wheels inside the turbo.
  • Engine Management Light (EML) on: Fault codes relating to ‘boost pressure deviation’ or ‘turbocharger actuator position’ directly indicate a fault with the turbo or its control system.
  • Excessive oil consumption: If the engine is using a lot of oil with no visible leaks, it is likely being lost through worn turbo seals and burnt during combustion.

Fitting notes for this unit

  • Replace in Pairs: The TDV8 engine has two identical turbos. It is best practice to replace both at the same time to ensure balanced performance and avoid a repeat job when the second original unit fails.
  • Mandatory Oil Feed Pipe Replacement: You MUST replace the oil feed pipe (Part No. LR004583). The original pipe contains a fine gauze filter which blocks over time, starving the new turbo of oil and causing immediate, catastrophic failure.
  • Pre-Installation Priming: Before connecting the oil feed pipe, use a syringe to squirt fresh engine oil into the turbo’s oil inlet port. Gently rotate the compressor wheel by hand to circulate the oil and protect the bearings on first start.
  • First Start Procedure: After fitting, disable the fuel injectors or fuel pump and crank the engine for 15-20 seconds. This allows the oil pump to build full pressure and deliver oil to the turbocharger before it spins at high speed.
  • Clean All Pipework: Thoroughly clean the intercooler and all boost pipes to remove any oil residue from the previous turbo failure. Trapped oil can be ingested by the engine on start-up, potentially causing an uncontrolled engine runaway.

Need this turbo cleaned or reconditioned?

Many turbo faults are actuator-only or VNT vane carbon buildup, not a failed core. We strip, ultrasonically clean, rebuild, and balance to OEM tolerances with a 24-month parts and labour warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How can I be sure this turbo fits my Range Rover?+
The most reliable method is to match the part number stamped on your original turbo. Look for LR017315 or 452239-5009s. If you cannot find it, please call us with your vehicle’s registration number and we can check for you.
What is the price and warranty for this part?+
Pricing depends on whether you opt for an exchange unit or our fitting service. All our reconditioned turbochargers come with a 24-month, unlimited mileage warranty, subject to correct fitting and maintenance procedures.
What is the typical lead time?+
We usually have these units built and ready on the shelf for next-day UK delivery. Our drive-in fitting service at our Birmingham workshop typically takes 1-2 working days, but please call to book an appointment.
What is included with the turbocharger?+
The reconditioned turbocharger assembly is supplied with a full engine-side gasket and fitting kit. We strongly advise purchasing a new oil feed pipe and banjo bolts, which we can also supply.
What causes the original TDV8 turbo to fail?+
The most common causes are oil starvation from a blocked feed pipe filter, or carbon build-up causing the variable vane mechanism to seize. Infrequent oil changes and using the incorrect grade of oil are major contributing factors.
