Description

This is a fully reconditioned Garrett GT17V turbocharger for the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi MK4 (140 HP model) manufactured between 2007 and 2014. As a Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) unit, it provides excellent throttle response and efficiency across the engine’s rev range by adjusting exhaust gas flow over the turbine wheel.

At Gap Turbos, we have seen these units in our Birmingham workshop for over a decade. Common failure modes are specific to this platform. The most frequent issue is the seizure of the VNT mechanism due to excessive carbon and soot build-up, often linked to EGR valve problems or driving patterns with many short journeys. This leads to ‘overboost’ or ‘underboost’ fault codes and the vehicle entering limp mode. Another common fault lies with the electronic actuator, which can fail electrically or mechanically, causing similar boost control problems. Standard bearing wear within the Centre Housing Rotating Assembly (CHRA) also occurs, typically caused by oil contamination or oil starvation from a blocked feed pipe.

Our reconditioning service is a comprehensive process. We completely dismantle the turbocharger and ultrasonically clean every component. All service parts, including journal and thrust bearings, piston rings, and oil seals, are replaced with new OE-spec items. The CHRA is then balanced on our VSR machine at speeds exceeding 150,000 RPM, ensuring performance and longevity beyond original factory tolerances. Finally, the VNT mechanism and electronic actuator are calibrated on a flow bench to guarantee correct boost delivery upon fitting.

We can recondition your existing turbo, supply a reconditioned unit from our stock on an exchange basis, or provide a complete supply and fit service. We can also perform a full diagnostic and clean of the vehicle’s intake and EGR system to prevent a repeat failure.

Common faults & troubleshooting

  • Sudden loss of power and engine management light on: This is the classic symptom of ‘limp mode’, often caused by a seized VNT mechanism or a faulty electronic actuator triggering an overboost or underboost fault code.
  • High-pitched whistling or siren noise under acceleration: This indicates worn bearings or a damaged compressor wheel, usually resulting from oil starvation or foreign object damage.
  • Visible blue or grey smoke from the exhaust: This is caused by failed oil seals within the turbo’s centre housing, allowing engine oil to leak into the intake or exhaust system and be burnt.
  • Poor fuel economy and sluggish performance: If the VNT vanes are partially stuck, the turbo cannot operate efficiently, leading to poor combustion, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption.
  • Rattling noise on engine start-up or shut-down: This can be from excessive play in the actuator linkage or wear in the VNT mechanism itself.

Fitting notes for this unit

  • Oil Feed Pipe MUST Be Replaced: The oil feed pipe for the 2.0 TDCi engine contains a fine internal gauze filter which cannot be effectively cleaned. It must be replaced with a new genuine Ford part to prevent oil starvation and immediate failure of the new turbo.
  • Prime The Turbo Before Starting: Before connecting the oil feed pipe, use a syringe to squirt 10-20ml of new, clean engine oil directly into the turbo’s oil inlet port. This ensures the bearings are lubricated from the very first rotation.
  • Crank Engine Without Firing: After full installation, disable the fuel system (e.g., by disconnecting the injector wiring harness) and crank the engine for 15 seconds. This will build full oil pressure throughout the system before the engine starts and the turbo spins at high speed.
  • Check and Clean Intake System: The previous turbo failure may have sent oil into the intercooler and pipework. All intake components must be removed and thoroughly cleaned to prevent this oil being ingested by the engine, which can cause damage.
  • Use All New Gaskets and Fixings: Do not reuse any of the old gaskets, copper washers, or studs. Use the complete fitting kit supplied to ensure there are no oil or exhaust leaks.
  • Perform an Oil and Filter Change: Always fit a new turbo using fresh, manufacturer-specified engine oil and a new, high-quality oil filter to remove any contaminants from the old unit’s failure.

Need this turbo cleaned or reconditioned?

Many turbo faults are actuator-only or VNT vane carbon buildup, not a failed core. We strip, ultrasonically clean, rebuild, and balance to OEM tolerances with a 24-month parts and labour warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How can I confirm this turbo fits my Mondeo?+
The best way is to check the metal identification plate on your current turbo for part numbers like 7G9Q6K682BD or 763647-5021s. Alternatively, you can provide us with your vehicle’s registration number and we will confirm the correct fitment.
What is the price and warranty period?+
The price depends on the service you require (recondition, exchange, or supply and fit). Please contact us for a specific quote. All our reconditioned turbochargers come with a comprehensive 24-month, unlimited mileage warranty.
How long will it take to get my car back on the road?+
We can usually dispatch a reconditioned exchange unit for next-day delivery across the UK. Our full drive-in, drive-out fitting service at our Birmingham workshop is typically completed within one working day.
What is included with the reconditioned turbo?+
The unit is supplied as a complete assembly, including the tested and calibrated electronic actuator. We also include a full fitting kit with all the necessary gaskets and studs for installation.
What is the most common cause of the original turbo failure?+
The primary cause is either oil starvation from a blocked oil feed pipe or oil contamination from infrequent oil changes. Seizure of the variable vane mechanism due to carbon build-up is also a very common fault on this particular engine.
