Description
This is a fully reconditioned Garrett GT15V (VNT) turbocharger, part number 753420-5005s, for the Citroen C4 1.6 HDi 110 HP model produced between 2004 and 2011. As a genuine Garrett unit rebuilt in-house at our Birmingham workshop, it meets or exceeds original equipment specifications.
The GT15V is a variable nozzle turbine turbocharger. This design allows for excellent response across the rev range, but it is susceptible to specific failure modes on the DV6TED4 engine. The most common issue we see is the variable vane mechanism seizing due to excessive carbon and soot build-up from the exhaust. This leads to incorrect boost levels, resulting in either underboost (poor performance) or overboost (triggering limp mode and engine management lights). Another frequent problem is oil starvation. The oil feed pipe for this engine has a very small internal diameter and an inline filter gauze which is prone to blocking with carbonised oil, cutting off lubrication and causing catastrophic bearing failure. Electronic actuator faults can also occur, preventing the vehicle’s ECU from controlling the vanes correctly.
At Gap Turbos, we address all these common faults during our reconditioning process. Each unit is completely disassembled. The core assembly (CHRA) is balanced to motorsport-grade tolerances, and all worn or out-of-spec components, including bearings and seals, are replaced. The variable nozzle mechanism is stripped, cleaned using ultrasonic and shot-blasting methods, and re-calibrated to ensure flawless operation. We can supply this unit from stock on an exchange basis, or we can recondition your own turbocharger. We also offer a full diagnostic and fitting service at our workshop, which includes essential preventative measures like replacing the oil feed pipe and cleaning the engine’s sump and oil pickup.

Common faults & troubleshooting
- Loss of power and ‘Anti-Pollution Fault’ message: This is often caused by the variable nozzle (VNT) mechanism sticking with soot, preventing the turbo from delivering the correct amount of boost.
- Loud whistling or siren noise under acceleration: This indicates worn bearings inside the turbo’s core assembly, usually a result of oil contamination or starvation. The unit requires immediate replacement to prevent further engine damage.
- Engine management light with overboost/underboost fault codes (P0234/P0299): This can point to a faulty electronic actuator, a vacuum leak in the control system, or seized VNT vanes.
- Blue/grey smoke from the exhaust, particularly on overrun: This is a classic sign of failed oil seals within the turbo, allowing engine oil to be burnt in the intake or exhaust stream.
- Visible oil leaks around the turbocharger or intercooler pipework: While this can be a boost pipe seal, it often indicates excessive pressure in the core assembly forcing oil past the seals, pointing to a blocked engine breather or worn turbo bearings.
Fitting notes for this unit
- Oil Feed Pipe is Mandatory: The oil feed pipe on the DV6 engine MUST be replaced with a new one. The original pipe contains a filter gauze that blocks with carbon, starving the new turbo of oil and causing immediate failure. Do not simply clean the old pipe.
- Sump and Oil Pickup Cleaning: Before fitting, the engine sump must be removed and the oil pump pickup strainer must be thoroughly cleaned of all sludge and carbon deposits. Failure to do this will contaminate the new oil supply.
- Use All New Gaskets: Always use the new gaskets, studs, and copper washers provided in the fitting kit. Re-using the old oil drain gasket is a common cause of leaks.
- Prime the Turbo: Before starting the engine for the first time, disable the fuel system (e.g., by unplugging the injector connectors) and crank the engine for 15-20 seconds. This allows oil pressure to build and fully lubricate the turbo’s bearings before it spins at high speed.
- Oil and Filter Change: Use the manufacturer-specified grade of engine oil and a new, high-quality oil filter. This is critical for the longevity of the new turbocharger.
- Check Ancillaries: Inspect the intercooler and all boost pipes for oil residue from the previous failure. They should be cleaned thoroughly to prevent oil being drawn into the engine on first start-up.
