Description
This is a reconditioned Garrett GT17V turbocharger for the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (130hp) model, manufactured between 2002 and 2007. As a direct replacement for original part numbers including 752233-5007s and 5S7Q6K682AE, this unit is rebuilt by Gap Turbos to meet or exceed original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications.
Our reconditioning process is comprehensive. Each turbocharger is completely disassembled and all components are subjected to an intensive cleaning process, including ultrasonic cleaning, to remove all carbon and oil deposits. The core components, specifically the bearings, seals, and piston rings, are replaced with brand new, OE-quality parts. The rotating assembly (compressor wheel and turbine shaft) is then precision balanced on our VSR (Vibration Sorting Rig) equipment at speeds exceeding 200,000 RPM. This two-plane balancing is critical for ensuring longevity and quiet operation. For this GT17V model, the variable nozzle turbine (VNT) mechanism is stripped, cleaned, and calibrated on a flow bench to ensure it delivers the correct boost pressure across the entire engine speed range.
Common failure modes for this specific turbocharger on the FMBA engine include seizure of the VNT vane mechanism due to excessive soot and carbon build-up, often a result of short journeys or EGR system faults. This leads to overboost or underboost conditions and can put the vehicle into ‘limp mode’. Another frequent issue is bearing wear caused by oil starvation or contamination. The oil feed pipe on this engine contains a small gauze filter which can become blocked over time, restricting the flow of vital lubrication to the turbo’s bearings. Electronic actuator failure is also a known fault point.

Common faults & troubleshooting
- Loss of power or vehicle entering ‘limp mode’: This is often caused by the VNT mechanism sticking due to carbon build-up, preventing correct boost pressure regulation.
- Whistling or siren-like noise under acceleration: This typically indicates a boost leak in the pipework between the turbo and the engine, or a damaged compressor wheel.
- Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust: A classic sign of failed oil seals within the turbo’s core, allowing engine oil to enter the exhaust or intake system.
- Engine management light (EML) on with overboost/underboost fault codes (e.g., P0234): This points directly to a fault with the turbo’s boost control, either the VNT mechanism or the electronic actuator.
- Excessive oil consumption with no visible external leaks: If engine compression is good, the turbo’s internal seals may have failed, causing oil to be burnt during combustion.
Fitting notes for this unit
- Mandatory Replacement: The oil feed pipe on this engine is a critical replacement item. Its internal gauze filter can block, causing oil starvation and immediate failure of the new unit.
- Pre-fitting Oil Prime: Before connecting the new oil feed pipe, crank the engine with the fuel supply disabled (e.g., by disconnecting injectors) until a clean, steady flow of oil is seen from the feed port. This purges old oil and debris.
- Gasket Surfaces: Ensure all gasket surfaces on the manifold, exhaust downpipe, and oil drain are scrupulously clean and flat before fitting the new gaskets provided. Do not use any form of liquid sealant.
- First Start Procedure: After installation, allow the engine to idle for a minimum of 5-10 minutes. This allows oil to circulate fully and the new bearings to bed in before they are placed under load. Do not rev the engine immediately.
- Intake System Clean: The previous turbo failure may have contaminated the intake system with oil. The intercooler and all boost pipes must be removed and thoroughly cleaned to prevent an engine ‘runaway’ situation on first start.
