Description
This is a fully reconditioned Garrett GT17V (Variable Nozzle Turbine) turbocharger, built to OEM specifications for the Toyota Avensis 2.0 D-4D (1AD-FTV engine). As a genuine Garrett unit, it has been professionally rebuilt at our Birmingham workshop to provide a reliable and cost-effective replacement for a failed original part.
At Gap Turbos, reconditioning is a comprehensive process. We completely disassemble the turbocharger, subjecting all components to rigorous inspection and specialist cleaning processes like vapour blasting to remove carbon deposits. The core of the unit, the CHRA (Centre Housing Rotating Assembly), is replaced with a brand new, precision-balanced assembly. The variable nozzle mechanism is stripped, cleaned, and calibrated to ensure correct boost control across the engine’s rev range. Finally, the electronic actuator is tested and calibrated on our flow bench to match factory performance parameters. This meticulous process ensures the unit performs as new.
Common failure modes for the GT17V on the 1AD-FTV engine are well-documented. The primary issue is often the seizure of the variable vane mechanism due to excessive soot and carbon build-up, a common problem on modern diesel engines with EGR systems. This causes the vanes to stick, leading to either under-boost (poor performance, black smoke) or over-boost (triggering ‘limp mode’). Other failures include wear in the journal bearings from oil contamination or starvation, and faults within the electronic actuator which controls the vane position.

Common faults & troubleshooting
- Loss of power and engine management light: This often points to a seized VNT mechanism or a faulty electronic actuator, preventing correct boost levels from being achieved.
- Vehicle enters ‘limp mode’ under acceleration: The ECU is detecting an over-boost condition, almost always caused by the variable vanes being stuck in the closed position due to carbon build-up.
- High-pitched whistling or siren noise from the engine bay: This is a classic symptom of worn bearings or a damaged compressor wheel inside the turbocharger.
- Black smoke from the exhaust: Insufficient boost pressure (under-boost) is causing the engine to run rich with fuel, resulting in unburnt diesel appearing as black smoke.
- Blue smoke and high oil consumption: This indicates failed oil seals within the turbo’s central cartridge (CHRA), allowing engine oil to be burnt in the intake or exhaust.
Fitting notes for this unit
- Oil Feed Pipe: It is mandatory to replace the oil feed pipe and its banjo bolt washers when fitting this turbo. The original pipe can become restricted with carbonised oil, which will starve the new unit of lubrication.
- Priming Procedure: Before connecting the oil return line and starting the engine, disable the fuel injectors and crank the engine for 15-20 seconds. This primes the new turbo’s bearing system with fresh oil, preventing a damaging dry start.
- Gaskets and Sealant: Use all new gaskets provided for the manifold, downpipe, and oil/coolant lines. Do not use any form of liquid sealant on the oil feed or drain gaskets as it can break off and block oil passages.
- Intake System Clean: Thoroughly inspect and clean the intercooler and all boost pipes to remove any oil residue or debris from the previous turbo failure. Failure to do so can cause immediate damage to the new compressor wheel.
- Actuator Check: Before finalising the installation, ensure the electronic actuator arm can move the VNT lever through its full range of motion without binding on heat shields or other components.
